I wanted to give you all a quick update.

My family and I were unable to attend the funeral. I got online to get the train tickets, and the price was DOUBLE what I was expecting (probably just because it was last minute - but how can you really plan for this type of occasion?). I even checked to see what the price would be if just two of us went on the trip - still expensive. All weekend I was trying to make arrangements for us to go. But with money already tight, we just couldn't do it (train, air, or car). I had to call my dad's wife and let her know. But...we will be planning a trip for this summer, if it's possible. Tickets for a planned trip (buying the tickets at least a week in advance) are half the price, plus I can use my AAA discount. I'd really prefer us to all go as a family anyway...And so we'll go and visit his grave site since we can't go to the service.

It's not fair that it has to cost so much for last minute travel. I really wanted to be there for a final farewell, to say a few words at the service, and for my husband to be a pall bearer. I know that my dad would understand why we were unable to go, though. And I know that he would not have wanted us to get into debt just to attend, which is what I was planning to do. But when I called his wife, she told me not to. She said he would not want that. And so we stayed at home. As I write this, the service is about to begin...

Even though we could not attend the funeral, I have been taking this time off. So again, I thank all of you. For being followers, for reading, for your kind thoughts and comments, for understanding. Thank you.

i see i come to this a few days late, but i am so sorry to hear of your loss. it's in situations like this that i get frustrated at the price structure of our economy - that last minute tickets would be so much more that you couldn't go to your father's service is unbelievable. i hope these days off have been a welcome respite for you and your family.

I found your blog through the Etsy forums, by the way.
