Higher Costs for Higher Education

It's no surprise that college is expensive. We all know that, right? But what is surprising to me is that for the past few years, with California's budget woes and cutbacks, there have been tuition increases in California for both the CSU and UC systems. It really makes me worry about sending my daughter to college in the not-so-distant future! Click the link below and take a look.

http://www.news10.net/news/article/145360/2/CSU-tuition-hikes-sparks-anger-and-worry

Looking at that newscast and reading the article is a big wake up call. A few months back, I posted about saving for college (see this post)...With all this new drama for tuition costs, I've decided the new items in our Etsy shop for this week will be found in our shop section HANDMADE by the KIDS.

This section of our shop is dedicated to items handmade and handpicked by the kids to be in this section. All money from sales in this section go to our kids' scholarship fund for education. Be sure to check it out!

And if you've got kids heading to college soon, or if you're a student yourself, or if you would just like to share your opinion, please share your thoughts on tuition increases!

My daughter graduated college last year and we're putting our son through now. Will be glad when the tuition bills stop coming, that's for sure. I love what you're doing with your new shop section for the scholarship fund. I wish I had thought of something like that when my kids were younger! Good luck!

Thanks for your comment, nangates! Thanks for the support for our special shop section as well. =) We've actually had the section for quite some time, shortly after we opened up shop. We also have a section called "4 a cause" where we donate portions of the proceeds to our favorite charities. Right now there are no items there, though (working on some that had previously sold). Every little bit helps. ;)

I love your Handmade by the kids section! What a great idea. Have you checked out Upromise?

Thanks, Leah! nangates reminded me that we had nothing in our charity section (it was renamed "For GOOD CAUSES," so I just relisted an item that sold awhile back. =) What's Upromise? I'll have to look into that.

What a great idea for your children's scholarship fund. I was lucky enough that Florida has a prepaid college tuition program. I don't know what I would have done without it!

I've spent over $150,000 on my education (BA & M. Div)...but it was worth every penny.

Just - I love your Kids section! I have one, too (I think you may have commented on it once, but I didn't respond - sorry!). It gives the kids a sense of accomplishment, along with a peek into money managing and a work-ish environment (yes, I'm making up words now). Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to seeing what the kids come up with this week :)

fortunately in Romania college is free of charge if you had decent marks in high-school..of course except for the private universities..

The scholarship fund section you've created in your shop is a fantastic idea! Tuition increases are making it more & more difficult for parents to send their children to college, but with you backing her up, I'm sure your daughter will make it!

I graduated from undergrad more than 5 years ago. I live in the Midwest, but even here, tuition increases every single year. Now, I have gone back for grad school, and I am amazed at how expensive it is to get an education!!

I did my undergrad here in CA about 10 years ago. It wasn't too bad. Then, I moved to NC and got my physical therapist assistant license. In CA the tuition at community colleges was $13 a unit. That same year it was $44 in NC. I was beyond shocked. And their education was far inferior in my opinion.
