Return of the Care Kit

With this being the third week of school, I thought I would give you all an update on the kindergarten situation. The entire first week of school (with the exception of the very first day) was pretty stressful. To read about the second day disaster, CLICK HERE.

On the third day, the care kit was permitted in the classroom. I took the Neosporin and the alcohol prep pads out (that has to be in the office, and I understand those having to be there). The school had received the fax from the dermatologist, and his moisturizing cream and aquaphor are allowed! By this time, though, my son was already hesitant to go to school. He was afraid the teacher hated him, and the kids wouldn't like him or want to play with him. I encouraged him to go, telling him that he would be just fine, and he would have his care kit in his cubby if he needed it. He reluctantly went to school, crying just a little bit when I left. I thought that he was going to make it through the day.

The Care Kit:
Aquaphor, Cetaphil cream, Band-Aids, tissue, sensitive skin wet wipes, alcohol-free hand sanitizer, aloe gel

However, I was called to the school again (once again, after recess time). When I arrived, I found him in the classroom doing somewhat all right, and the principal was sitting in with the class. She took me outside, and told m
e that after the office called home, she came to the classroom and sat with him, helped him with his care kit, and he began to do much better. She and I stayed in the classroom for the rest of the day. He did well - a little sad, and a whole lot itchy - but OK.

After that, the principal and I talked about his condition and how it related to his emotions. I let her know that I had mentioned it the day before - emotions can trigger a flare-up for a eczema. Taking away his care kit was a HUGE trigger, and it also caused anxiety for the third day of school. Going back to school (even with his care kit now allowed) would take him some time. If he had been
able to keep his care kit with him, I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened. We had been prepping him for school for months. She suggested that she would meet him before school the next day and sit in class with him for a little bit in an attempt to ease him back into the idea of school. She also offered some help from a teacher's aide that just so happened to be available for a few days. So that was the plan...And it's been working!

Thursday and Friday of the first week of school went much better, still a bit of a struggle, but I wasn't called to the school. He has a special bin above his cubby just for his care kit, and with the help of the teacher's aide he decorated it with lots of fun stickers.

Monday of the second week was the best day yet! The entire second week of school went smoothly (the teacher's aide happened to be available ALL week - HUGE help, and I can't thank her enough).

Now we're on week three. Yesterday was the last day with the teacher's aide. She has been assigned to another school. =( But, twice a week, I now volunteer in the classroom to help out. So far, it's going well. Success so far!!!

Thanks for reading! Here's a new item in our shop for you to view. Happy Wednesday.

Should we?

So last year for Halloween we made jack-o-lantern chocolates. It was for a fundraiser for my daughter. I'd like your thoughts...Should we make them again this year? Should we put them in our Etsy shop?

Here are some pics:

What do you think?

First Day Success, Second Day Disaster

At first I was excited to share that my new kindergartener started his school year with an excellent first day of school! He has severe eczema, and I knew it would be an issue. Because of this, we prepared him his "care kit" to take to school.
He wasn't even excited about starting school until we bought his new backpack and the items for his care kit. Most loved items in the care kit are his moisturizer and Aquaphor. These are things he can't go through a single day without, so he was super excited that we bought the smaller versions for his care kit so he could take them to school with him.First day of school was a BIG SUCCESS! He didn't scratch the WHOLE day, and he didn't even have to open his care kit at all. I was beyond surprised. I was shocked. He has never gone that long without applying his cream or his Aquaphor.

I know it must have been really difficult for him not to scratch for that long. I think he was worried about what the kids would say or think, and he was occupied with new activities (which is absolutely fabulous), and just the overall new experience.

Second day of school...Not so good. In fact, it was a disaster. They informed me that he couldn't have his care kit with him. We were told I had to take the kit home, and we needed a doctor's note (even though it's not a prescription or any medication at all). So I reluctantly took the care kit home with me, and I knew that it was going to be a bad day.

Sure enough, the school called me a a few hours later. He had a flare-up. And I guessed why. It was probably from recess, going outside in the heat; I was right. The heat caused a flare-up, and after recess he couldn't stop scratching. What made it worse was that he had no moisturizer or Aquaphor to soothe his skin. He was sent to the office, and I was called. I was pleading my case with the school secretaries, principal, and the school nurse. The school nurse still said I needed a doctor's note for the lotion. A prescription for lotion! Can you believe that??? I can understand the doctor's note for his other medications (his medicated ointments, his epi-pen, his inhaler), but lotion??? The flare-up would have never been so bad if he had had his cream and Aquaphor with him. He would've calmed down and not scratched as much (he still would've scratched, don't get me wrong, but not as badly).

No matter how ridiculous, I complied. The dermatologist's office thought it was ridiculous too. But - whatever it takes to get that care kit in the classroom, that's what we'll do. And now I wonder, if we switch moisturizers (because we use many), do I have to get a doctor's note for each one? What a pain that would be!

So now he went back to school for the third day. The doc's note is in the office, safe and sound, and his care kit is allowed to stay in the classroom with him. We'll see how it goes...

In 15 Minutes...

What can you do in 15 minutes? I can get a lot done in 15 minutes...Dishes, folding laundry, and the list goes on and on. And after watching GMA this morning, I realized there's one more thing I could get done in 15 minutes. There was a new study done that shows just 15 minutes a day of exercising can increase your life span. That's even better than the 30 minutes a day I thought it was!

Super cute bear image found on Click here to go there! It's a photo sculpture. :)

Watch this video clip from ABC News:

This is a motivator for me for sure! In 15 minutes...You could take the dog for a quick walk around the block. You could do sit ups during every commercial while you watch an hour of TV. In fifteen minutes...Easy peasy! My goal is still the 30 minutes a day, but hey - 15 minutes - we can all squeeze that in some where during the day, right? So let's do it! =)

Breakfast is Important

I'm pretty sure that by now we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Well, sometimes it's really tough to make breakfast when you're in a hurry. So today I'll share a quick, simple breakfast with you - one that my kids LOVE. It's super-easy!

low-fat vanilla yogurt
fruit of your choice - can be fresh or frozen (& thawed)
Kellogg's® Special K® cereal (or another flake cereal)

In cups or glasses, just layer the yogurt, fruit and cereal, then serve.
I don't measure, I just make what I know my kids will eat. Usually I put these parfaits in 4 oz or 6 oz cups that we have. It's a quick breakfast that they really enjoy!

You can also add your own twist to it. We change the yogurt flavor (lemon is a big hit), try different fruits (the picture shown is a frozen fruit medley, but one of the kids' faves is fresh strawberry & blueberry mix), or leave out the fruits and use granola.
Whatever you do, it's all good!!! =)
Because breakfast is important.

*Kellogg's and Special K are registered to Kellogg's brand.

Team Work

So I'm a member of some pretty fantastic Etsy teams. Being a part of a team doesn't mean it's all just fun and games, though. It involves work...Team Work!

Promo Team!

For example, the Promotional Frenzy Team has really been a motivator for me. They got me into social media...And they've created a monster out of me! Really...I'm still working on getting all my Pinterest boards full of great finds (but I'm officially hooked)...All this stuff is kind of addicting. Just the other day on the news I saw a segment on Internet Addiction. It was talking about how people start
having anxiety attacks if they can't log on! It made me think about just a couple of months ago when our household was completely without a computer (yeah, it wasn't fun, but we made it). Now that I'm into all this new stuff with team work, though, I can't picture a day, week, let alone an entire MONTH without the computer!!! The thought scares me...

All this promoting, it's a lot of work. I've been on the computer a lot lately, and I realized that with school starting soon, I might not be able to have all this time on my hands! But I'm really enjoying being on all the teams I'm a part of, and I'm going to try my best to keep up. =)

There's a new team that I recently joined too. It's called Blogging Buddies, and I'm liking it there. It reminds me a lot of another blogging team that I'm on (that I love), Etsy Blog Team. But Blogging Buddies is a smaller group, and recently I've found some new friends there! If you're a blogger, and you're an Etsy member, I invite you to come join Blogging Buddies! Soon we'll have a team button, made by my daughter. =) Like the Etsy Blog Team, Blogging Buddies is a team where we
share our blogs. We also share giveaways, new items, and support each other.

A team that I've applied to is Etsy Angels - an awesome team dedicated to raising funds for various charities. I love this idea, because fundraising has always been a passion of mine - and I love supporting charities. I applied, but I haven't completed the application process. After just beginning all the social media venues, I want to get comfy with all of that before I completely dedicate to another team with required activities, but I know I want to join. It's a great group.

That's it for today's Team Work Spotlight! Teams are fun. You get to meet new people, make new friends - and best of all, you get to work together. Sometimes, teamwork makes everything better! =) Happy Wednesday.
