Bee Swarms

Over the kids' Spring Break, we encountered a swarm of bees...Right in our front yard!  I didn't get a photo, but here's one that showed up on the news a couple days later.  These were probably the same bees that were in front of our house!

Click the photo for source and more info.

It was crazy!  The swarm looked just like the one pictured, but maybe even bigger.  It was at least 2 feet long, and it was in our neighbor's tree that hangs over our front yard.  My daughter was the first to see it, because there were so many bees flying around, and they were loud.  We couldn't even go in or out of our front door.  We stayed inside the whole time!  We didn't know who to call, so we just waited.

I'm glad the bees only stayed in front of our house for a couple of hours.  They were spooked by a loud motorcycle that passed by.  They got angry, flew around in front of our entire yard and driveway (it sounded like a helicopter!), and then took off to another neighbor's tree.

A couple days later, we saw this on the news.  It turns out, swarms of bees have been spotted in over four cities in Northern California, probably more (because I know WE didn't report the one we saw).  They say it's the heat that's to blame.

Have you ever seen a swarm of bees?  This was my first time, and I don't want to see one so up-close again!

Did you know? When you see this happening it is because the queen bee has stopped to rest and all of her followers land with her. When she is rested and ready to move (trying to find a new hive location) all the other bees follow her. That's the simple explanation. Usually, if left alone, they will simply travel until they find a place to make their new hive.

This is what my husband told us too. I had no idea. I've never even seen a bee hive before (I've seen a wasp nest, but not a bee hive). It was crazy to see all those bees! It was like seeing something on the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet!
Thanks for the explanation, Suzie! You're awesome!

I have never seen bees like that, it sounds like it was a scary day. I am glad they moved on, that would not have been fun to deal with that for the season.
