The Picnik is Over

Just last week as I logged in to my Picnik account to quickly edit a few photos, a large pop-up appeared..."Picnik will be closing" - and it's closing on April 19, 2012! I've been using Picnik since the beginning, really. It was suggested to me by another Etsy shop owner. It's very easy to use, simple, and best of all - FREE. But now...The Picnik is over. =(

I'm looking for another free program (preferably also simple and easy to use). I downloaded Picasa, but I'm having a couple of issues with it already (can't seem to figure out how to re-size a photo!).

So now I ask you this: What photo editing software do you use or what would you recommend?

Kodak Moments

The Eastman Kodak Company recently filed for bankruptcy. Do you remember the phrase, "It's a Kodak moment"? I do.

Founder George Eastman made the first simple, easy-to-use camera available to consumers in 1888, and a slogan - "You press the button, we do the rest." Kodak is a well-known brand, and I hope they can come out of bankruptcy with success, because there are so many more "Kodak moments" to be enjoyed.

Here are a few vintage Kodak cameras that I found on Etsy! Click on the image to go to the item description.

Always remember the Kodak Moments. I've owned two or three Kodak cameras. Did you (or do you) own a Kodak camera?

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day

So Valentine's Day is just around the corner. We've been trying to add Valentine's items to our shop...And we're getting there - slowly, but surely!

My kids love to get crafty. We usually make all of our Valentine's Day cards to send out to family and friends each year. Sometimes we'll find other fun things to make too. This year, the first thing the kids wanted to use was paint. While on a trip
to a craft store, I found these really cute inexpensive magnets that I thought they would like, so I bought a couple. Here is the first finished piece:

What do you think? Do you have any Valentine's Day preparation traditions?

Friday Features - Two Products for Nursing Moms

My baby girl just turned a year old, and my nursing days will soon be over. There are two great handmade items that helped me through my breastfeeding days, and I really wanted to share them. I've been saving this post for awhile now. If you're a nursing mom, you have to check out these products!

TWO GREAT HANDMADE PRODUCTS FOR NURSING MOMS
My Nursing Pads from Nicole's Breast Friends

My Microwavable Eye Pillow from Little Peeps

First, a little background on my story...
My baby girl was born prematurely and had trouble with breast
feeding from the start. She was tube fed for nearly a week, and she couldn't latch properly. I pumped milk for a loooooong time, because even when she left the hospital, she couldn't nurse. When she finally did get the hang of it, her latch still wasn't 100% correct. Because of this, I suffered from mastitis (breast infection) on more than one occasion (not fun at all).

I found that one of the reasons for the repeat infection was because the washable nursing pads that I had been using were not keeping the moisture away from the skin (even when changed frequently). So, I resorted to disposable nursing pads at the suggestion of the doctor.

Until I found the Etsy shop Nicole's Breast Friends. Here you will find washable
organic nursing pads (and they're cute too)! These are SO different than the brand name store-bought washable nursing pads that I had before. The cotton flannel is so soft against the skin, and the PUL layer truly works! And the biggest seller for me...The organic bamboo cotton, because as Nicole says in her item description, it's known for its naturally antibacterial properties. I will let part of Nicole's description explain the rest:
These breast pads are made of:
1 outer layer of all natural organic flannel ( Soft against skin)
2 inner layers of organic bamboo cotton ( Known for it’s naturally antibacterial properties)
1 layer of PUL ( Waterproof barrier that ensures no leakage)
1 outer layer of stylish 100% cotton fabric

I found Nicole's Breast Friends when baby girl was almost 9 months old, and I bought a pair of these nursing pads, just to see if they would help (because I was going through the disposable pads like crazy - and it's expensive!). They work so well that I came back and bought two more pair, even though I knew I only had a few more months left of nursing. It was money WELL spent!

Now a little more of the story...
Because I had gone through the infection symptoms more than once, I could start to tell when I was getting close to having an actual infection. To prevent the full-blown infection (and to ease the pain if you do have the full-blown infection), one of the doctor's recommendations is heat compresses.

I found Beckie from beckorama.etsy.com, owner of Little Peeps. Her products are very high-quality (and again, really cute too)! I bought an eye pillow, and while the name implies that it's used for the eyes, I used my pillow for my breast to prevent infection. The pillows are filled with flax seed, and I'll let par
t of Beckie's item description tell you about it.

Flax Seed is an herbal flower seed, rather than a food product. This eliminates the "food" smell you get with other fillers. Unlike rice or other grain products (which are mostly water), Flax Seed is 30-40% oil, which remains inside the seed to be warmed again and again. Most grain products loose their ability to retain heat as the water cooks out of the grains. When heated, a Flax Seed wrap or pillow retains heat for up to 45 minutes, providing a moist heat.

The warm compresses I had previously used only stayed warm for a few minutes. This eye pillow, stayed warm beyond the suggested 45 minutes! The size of the pillow was just enough so that it fit around the troublesome area. And I know for a fact that it prevented at least four (probably more) infections from setting in - and that means I did not have to go to the doctor or go through the pain of a full-blown infection! I have since been back to buy more Little Peeps Packs for family (the eye pillow is great for headaches, and I imagine the neck wrap to be super relaxing).

To wrap it up...
If you're a nursing mama, know about mastitis (as I've heard cases have been on the rise), and you're looking for great handmade products that might be beneficial for you, check out these shops today! I highly recommend both of them and will continue to do so. Click on the images, and you should go to their item descriptions.

Nicole's Breast Friends
She's got more than just nursing pads too! There are seat belt covers, crocheted items...Visit the shop and see for yourself. =)

Little Peeps
Little Peeps carries the eye pillows, neck wraps, decorative pillow covers, and more. Take a look and see what you can find! =)
