How did Karen start selling on Etsy?
Here's here answer:
But, on April 1st of that year I was involved in a car accident on my way to work & life was changed forever.
After several surgeries & a lot of rehab I regained some function of my left hand & most of my right but the back injuries continue to haunt me even to this day. I was not able to return to teaching & was really quite lost.
Then my grand-daughter was born & it seemed so was I. Being around the little one brought back that feeling of connectedness & purpose I once felt in the classroom.
I've always enjoyed crafting but got sidetracked with all the medical issues & physical limitations.
My grand-daughter is a fair skinned red-head- needless to say- being out in the sun is a big concern.
One day my daughter-in-law was complaining that there just weren't any cute hats out there- very few stores even carried them.
I felt compelled to find the perfect hat- but nothing- at least something affordable & so the quest began. I would make my sweet angel a hat!!!
Problem was I had absolutely no sewing experience & wanted it to be a surprise!!!!
Don't really want to re-live that disaster but finally after dozens of tries- a wearable creation emerged.
Upon presenting it to my sweet angel- she asked if it had a name- it's a hat- a name????
And as if by magic I just blurted out- "BOOGITYBOOGITYBOO"!!!
Well- the rest is the story thus far- everyone- everywhere- saying you need to make more & sell them!!!
Where to begin? ETSY seemed like the right fit. Handmade items created from ingenuity & passion.
And though the process is literally quite painful for me physically- the joy is worth it!! (I will attach a few appreciation pics)
I have really been humbled by the patience exhibited by my customers in wait time for custom orders- which is about 1-2 weeks depending on orders.
What inspires her designs?
Children & nature are my motivators but usually not spot on. I get what I call visions- peeks, glimpses- windows- if you will. Sometimes they come in dreams- the middle of a shower or while driving in the car. I can usually track back to where I may have seen the color combination or a feeling connected with an experience that I want to re-live through my piece but sometimes they are just an illusive gift!!!
My customers are also very involved in the process from my FaceBook fans to Etsy followers or fellow Tweeters- I often look to them for guidance, inspiration & advice!!!!!
Does she have a favorite color/fabric/design that she likes to use when she creates? Here's what she said:
As I mentioned before- I LOVE COLOR- unusual tones- mixing textures, designs & styles. I tend to be quite diversified from vintage motifs to novelty prints- depending on my mood & what i find striking & out of the box. I've run into a bit of difficulty with using so many patterns- sometimes there is concern over how to match the item with other wardrobe pieces so I am currently working on building an array of items that easily coordinate & can be bundled for additional savings to the customer.
My vision for the future is to offer a vast array of wearable art of a unique nature. I have a multitude of projects on the horizon.
I will be releasing more onesies- tutu's- specialty bibs- headbands- diaper covers- & various crochet items in the months to come!!!!
