No Niche Blogging {Critique my Blog}

I realized a long time ago that I don't have a niche for my blog. It's just my little spot in the blogosphere, but it's not in one specific category at all. I'm what we bloggers call a Lifestyle Blogger.

I'm not just an Etsy seller blogging about small business and handmade exclusively (that's just what I started out doing). I'm not an arts & crafts or DIY blogger either (Have I shared a DIY yet? I do have some possible posts.). I'm not solely a foodie (if I could take better pictures, I might have more posts), and I don't focus on mommy blogging 100% of the time. Beauty and fashion are only on occasion (again, pictures are a big deal for me)

I don't have just one topic to blog about. I'm all over the place! But hey, that's how my life is...A little all over the place, a little chaotic - a little of this and a little of that, but a whole lot of me. And that's how it is. It's my life. So I guess I am a lifestyle blogger...

I'm not the best blogger, by far, but I try to do my best.

There are tons of things that I still need to learn (there's SO much to learn). I only just started to join blogger communities and groups a short while ago. I barely started with my affiliates, and I'm still learning so much about monetization, among other things. Plus, I'll tell you...I just re-signed up for Google Analytics for my blog too (long story there...)

Yesterday I started learning about emails and domain names (and connecting the two). Who knew that when I purchased my domain name that an email address automatically came with? I sure didn't!

And throughout this learning process, there's an amazing group of well-seasoned bloggers, willing to help me, give advice and tell me their stories. Bloggers are great. Blogging friends are awesome! (You know who you are. *wink*)

There's always room for improvement. Today I'd like to ask you - as my readers, my friends, my peers - to critique my blog.

I want to know what you think.

What do you like about my blog? What would make it easier to read? What other improvements could be made? What would you like to see more of in my content?

I want to know what I can do better. Help me out and take a few minutes to surf my website, and then tell me what you think. Leave a comment with one pro and one con. It's much appreciated! I'll do the same for you too, if you want. Just ask me in a comment. =0)

And tell me...What's your blogging niche?

Hello, I recognized so much of me in your post. I'm also a lifestyle blogger and I don't know many things about how to "better my blog audience". But, hey, blogging is not really about finding a niche or making money (I don't want adds on my blog that I can't "control". Maybe I will look for partnership, but I'm not sure).
Blogging is about finding who you are and what you can share with others, what is worth in our lifes and can improve the life of someone else (even if it's just one person). That's the way I see blogging. It can be a diary or it can be a newspaper. It can be a photo album or a "writings" booklet. It's who we are. If you write about things you are not really interested in, if you are not true to yourself, you miss the point of a blog. And you lie to yourself.
Keep doing what you like doing, explore the possibilities but don't let the thoughts of others and money make you lose sight from what is YOU.
Friendly, Eolia

Hey Kim,

I actually have two blogs. One is a niche blog on how to make extra money from home and then you know my other one Product Review Mom.

I will say that niche blogging has helped me make a lot of money blogging and now I make a full time income doing it. My advice, join affiliate companies and start adding affiliate links to old post, especially post that has high traffic.

Affiliate marketing makes me thousands of dollars a month and the income is passive. I'm trying to dip my hands in sponsored posts to take my income to the next level.

Kim, if you ever need any help please let me know. :-)

Thank you Kim. Like you, I am all over the place, and now I know what to call myself, a lifstyle blogger. lol. I personally like your blog as is. I don't have advertising on my blog, because I just don't want to be tied down to what I can write. I just like to write about the things I like. :0)

I also blog about a bunch of different topics, but I think that makes a blog more interesting. I like when bloggers write about many different interests and hobbies. I consider myself a lifestyle blogger, too.

For the most part I really enjoy your blog! I love how supportive you are of other bloggers and people in general. And I like how colourful your blog is and that you use a simple font. I really don't have any constructive criticism to give.

I call mine an art blog because I started it to promote my own art ... but I get distracted easily by shiny things and mostly drool over other shops' creations.

I really enjoy reading your blog! My only suggestion is to simplify the navigation - shorten the banner height and arrange all the ways to subscribe to your blog in one place, instead of having half on top left and rest on mid to bottom right.

I have no specific niche either and I'm okay with that! It leaves me open to blogging about anything that suits my fancy that week :-) I consider myself a lifestyle writer and leave it for my readers to figure out what that means.

Like most here, I am a lifestyle blogger with a focus on home + all that goes with it. I love being able to flow with what's happening in my life at that current moment, no matter what that may be. I think it makes for a more interesting read. Although the downside is that lifestyle bloggers are not often used as a reference since we're not experts in any one subject.

Well you got some great feedback. We have been following each other for a long time and I like your blog! I guess I would be considered a beauty blogger which is great but every now and then I like to mix it up a bit. I like blogging on other topics that interest me, I have a travel section as well and I share recipes. I like to infuse some of myself and personality into my blog and write about varying topics to attract a wider audience.

I guess I'd have to throw mine in the DIY/Craft blog category, if I had to pick! Though, I too blog about a large number of things! I love your site the way it is! Maybe my only suggestion is the same as Kristin's- to shorten the banner a little.. I'm in the process of doing the same to mine so people see more of my content when they first land on my page! :)

Hi Kim, I always enjoy your blog since it is a little of everything. I can't really critique it since I feel like a blog is someone's personal place on the web that they share with others. One of the things I love about blogs is that each one is different reflecting the person behind it.

Like you, mine is all over the place. I keep mine more as a journal so I can document my life and have it to look back on many years to come....since I'm terrible about traditional journaling. Hopefully the web still allows me to view it when I'm 80 years old. :)

This is me, too!!! I just can't commit to any ONE topic so I, too, am all over the place! Thank you for posting this. Feels better knowing I'm not the only one! And I enjoy your lifestyle blog very much!

I'm a DIY/Craft blogger but I throw in food and family posts since those are the things I love.

I think the key is writing about what you love. Not everyone needs a niche. I don't exclusively read one type of blog.. so it doesn't bother me if someone writes about a lot of different stuff! It is just like an appetizer sampler platter.. a little bit of everything for everyone!

As I read your post... I thought this is so me.. I have a little of this and a little of that.. hence my blog's name This and That.. but as I progress in my blogging I have expanded what I want to blog about and I really don't want to stick to one thing.. So I guess I am a lifestyle blogger too. We all have so much to learn as we go on our journey and I am so glad to have the help of all the bloggers I have met on this journey.

"Lifestyle" is still a style :) I only wish I could blog like you! :)

I think your blog is great. My blog tends to lean toward recipes or crochet but I never plan it that way. In fact I don't keep a blog calendar. When something comes to my mind I will run to the computer and blog about it. Some things I publish and some I end up deleting because I cant seem to make a creative written post. I never know what I will blog about next. Where did you get a domain?

I think having a niche-less blog is a great thing! I blog about beauty, and I feel like the box is too small sometimes. I go outside the box a little bit sometimes, and my readers tolerate me fairly well. But sometimes it is hard to find things to blog about.

holly said...

I'm with you on that! I spent a lot of time last month trying to figure out what I wanted to write about on my new blog and decided I didn't want to pigeon hole myself into one category... so I'm calling it a personal blog and leaving it open to whatever I want to post about :)

As far as a critique... I wouldn't change a thing. I think you have a great mix of topics on your blog, and like how honest you are in your writing -like your post recently about feeling down. You are always true to you and it shows through in your content!

Oh Kim, we're in the lifestyle bloggers club. Actually, it's the best niche (Legally, call mixture of everything as lifestyle blogging) I'd love to read some of your real life experiences and some funny stories :) To be honest, I simply love your blog!

Noor said...

girl!!!!!!!! I am a lifestyle blogger to because yeah I am not even pro in anything or what ;) but blogging is more important as a hobby than those niches .
My advice for your blog would be to de-clutter your sidebar. And I would like to see more recipe posts :)

You have done really well for the life style blogging... I think for me I used to do that and now my blog is slowing growing because I remain to stay on topic even though its the spirit side of things. I have these weekly angel cards that I try to do and that actually really helps me gain more followers and comments along the way over time so it is definitely better than when I first started when I thought doing a personal blog would be better... I found my blog is slightly more active because of the niche i am doing of course every now and then I change it up and not be spiritual just to give it a change of pace lol

To be honest I love your random postings because I never know what I am gonna read next so keep up the great work Kim!

I too am a "lifestyle" blogger. I used to rack my brain for a niche I'd love to write about most but it just isn't happening, I love doing all kinds of topics.

It's so hard not to compare our sites with others but it's really the worst thing we can do. Do what YOU like and others will like it too :) Your site is excellent and it's easy to navigate.
