Scarves for SOS Thailand {Elizabeth Koh GIVEAWAY}

Last year I had the opportunity to collaborate with a new Etsy shop for a product review and giveaway for what was then called Smiles by JEM (see the product review HERE). Now known as Elizabeth Koh, and 18 months strong, this California-based business still remains one close to my heart because the owners have BIG hearts.

Elizabeth Koh (EK) offers beautiful ethically made handcrafted accessories. Plus, EK gives back a portion of their proceeds to the SOS Children's Villages in Thailand. What does "ethically made" mean? I'll let their website tell you:

"Ethically made
means knowing where our products are made, what they are made of, and ensuring that every person who plays a role in the creation of our brand is paid fair wages and provided with a safe, clean environment to create our products."

On their most recent trip to Thailand to work on the newest seasonal line, owners Janelle and Megan took these awesome photos and allowed me to share them here with you. Let's learn about the process of how these scarves are handmade and the SOS Children's Villages:

Meet Amhpa and Tong: These two women manage our operation in Thailand and hand make every sample before instructing the rest of the team. We spend most of our time in Thailand with them revising designs, sourcing fabric and bouncing new ideas off each other (with the help of our amazing translator Debbie). While we are in the United States these women manage orders, quality control and hire their family as necessary to produce our scarves. Most of the women who make our scarves are related: sisters, cousins, daughters and aunts. In Thailand it is common for families to live in Villages together and most of their extended family lives together in their village.
These wonderful women knit, crochet, and sew all of our scarves using 100% cotton yarn and fabric. Sometimes all three techniques will be employed in the creation of one scarf (which is how we create our seamless designs!). Ampha and Tong have been knitting and crocheting for over 30 years as this craft has been passed down through their family. We are so proud to work with these women!

About SOS Children's Villages:

The core of Elizabeth Koh is our commitment to improving the communities where our products are made. We donate 10% of our proceeds to provide shelter, education, and a loving home environment to children in Thailand through our partnership with SOS Children’s Villages.

SOS Children’s Villages house 600 youth in their 5 villages throughout Thailand. We have visited the orphanages and seen the incredible good they do to help Thai Children. Unlike other orphanages, SOS encourages a family environment by placing children in a home together with a mother figure, where they develop as siblings into a family. They live in a home with brothers and sisters, and become family for life. SOS supports these children well into adulthood, even through college. Not only do they support children at the village, they also provide schooling and lunches to elementary school children in the nearby villages.

By supporting Elizabeth Koh by wearing our scarves, you will support a child’s development, and together we will encourage similar programs to be established worldwide.
