Soak Up the Sun {Words for my Wednesday & a GIVEAWAY too}

I don't visit the doctor frequently, but I consider myself to be a pretty healthy person overall (minus the many extra pounds I've gained in most recent years). I don't know if it's the winter weather or what, but I've got a severe Vitamin D deficiency. :( Doc even said she really doesn't know how I get up and out of bed in the morning! (Hhhmmm...No wonder why it seems I never have any energy. And I thought it was just because of the weight gain.)
Anyway, on to the Words for my Wednesday. They're all about sunshine today. It's what the doctor ordered!

I've been prescribed 15 minutes of sunshine time, wearing a short sleeve shirt (she said a tank top is even preferred), with NO sunscreen, between the hours of 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when the sun's UV rays aren't as harmful. 



I think this is the first that I've ever heard a doctor say, "Don't use sunscreen!" I now have a Vitamin D supplement as well. And it's funny, because as I was walking into the doc's office, I snapped the shot below, because I thought the sun was looking particularly gorgeous that day among all the pretty clouds. You may have seen it already on Instagram or facebook, because I shared it there.


And this shot above was taken at nearly 5:00 pm, which means - the days are getting longer, and spring will soon be here! In turn, that also means more sunshine for me to soak up! Obviously, I need it.

WebMD says the following about Vitamin D deficiency:
"Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Traditionally, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease in which the bone tissue doesn't properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities. But increasingly, research is revealing the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems.
Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabeteshypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis."

So, if winter weather has you feeling a little sluggish...Get some sun, even if it's just a little bit. You need it. Go ahead and soak it up!

It is often cloudy here so I always buy calcium with Vitamin D. Real sun every day would be better, of course...

I can't wait to get out and enjoy some sunshine! We just got around 10-12" of snow this week...yuk!

ME TOO! I have the same deficiency and I take a vitamin for it. My doctor hasn't told me to go outside without sunscreen, but I think it would be good for me!

I, too, was diagnosed with D deficiency (although I don't think it was severe) a couple years ago and that gave me a good reason to remember to take a daily supplement. Yay for yummy gummies. :D

Wow, I love this advice. I take liquid vitamin D drops because I don't get enough sunshine. I need to remember to step away from my computer and get outside more often :-)

I just got full blood work drawn up today, but I've been vitamin D deficient in the past. I heard that even indoor tanning helps? It def helps mentally from not being out in the sun.

I wish I could find some sunshine - only the liquid variety here these days. I'll have to keep taking my vitamin D and wait for spring!

Getting a little more sunshine in your life will not only help with the Vitamin D deficiency, but help with your spirit as well. Even though I live in the snowbelt area, if I can when I see the sunshine I go for it. The older we get, the more important I think it is.

I do too have a Vitamin D deficiency and I hate it...I have to take Vitamin D every day and I always forget. So ready for the summer to heat up my yard so I can lay and soak some vitamin D the natural way :)
