Boss Day and a Smoke Cloud

Good morning. Happy Monday to you. Today is National Boss's Day.
I'm bringing donuts into the office, which means I have to leave for work earlier...Which means I need to wake up earlier...Which means coffee will definitely be needed.

Sometimes I miss the days of sleeping in and being only my own boss. The stay and work at home mom boss. But I must say, I like the office and the day job too. I don't really mind it. But for all you awesome bosses out there...
Happy Boss' Day!

So last week I didn't blog because I went on a field trip with my son's sixth grade class (more on that to come later this week, I hope). It was on Tuesday, so some of the fires of Northern California were still just new. The smoke was in the air, and it was so hazy all over. It really made it hit home that these fires were close to our area.

On our way back home, we saw a huge cloud of smoke near the freeway we were travelling on...And it was in that moment that I really started to feel the heartbreak. You see things and hear the stories on the news, but it's not the same as seeing something with your own eyes. Even seeing this at a distance, it was hitting home. These fires are no joke.

I snapped this shot from the school bus window.

Coming back to work on Wednesday last week, my office offered an opportunity to volunteer with disaster relief efforts. I signed up. I'll be headed out to the Sonoma/Napa area later this week. Before I go, I'll be collecting donations to take with me so that I can drop them off to some of those in need...Because there are so many in need right now.

I'm collecting:
* toothbrushes
* toothpaste
* deoderant
* lotion
* packages of socks & underwear
And specifically for the kids, I'm also collecting:
* coloring books
* crayons
* books

Other items are welcome too, of course, but I've learned that there's a big need for toiletry items right now. Since these items are small and easy to collect, I'll be asking my coworkers to contribute whatever they can before I head out. I hope to gather at least one trunk full for the trip. We'll see how it goes...I just want to help.

I'll probably continue to be collecting these items into the holiday months, because these people have lost everything. It's time like these when we need to come together as a community, as one, and help each other.

I'll be posting later this week, so please stay tuned!

Easy DIY Halloween Luminaries from Crafty Lumberjacks

You've GOT to watch the youtube video these guys created with their niece and nephew. It's incredibly cute. And my kids now want to make these luminaries. But what's also great is that you can make these without the Halloween theme too. I'm glad I found their blog through our awesome party!

20 Ways to Save from Fluster Buster

I'm really trying to get back to simple living lately, so this post about ways to save money gave me a few reminders of ways that I can cut back. I encourage you to visit and see if there's one or two things on the list that you could try!

Now, let's get this party started!

If you are not already, please follow our hosts on Instagram this week! Instagram is one of my favorites, even though it has changed algorithms and acts a lot more like facebook now (which is frustrating), I still use it and love it.

While I Was Away (Part One): Yelp and Me

It's been quite awhile since I've really blogged. I thought it fitting to go ahead and share what I was up to while I was away, so here I go...

Well, it was no secret that I had HUGE internet connection issues for years. I'm not even exaggerating...It was a problem for YEARS.
So when I wasn't blogging or doing very much online, all I had was my iPhone. I only use a couple of social media apps on my phone - Instagram and Twitter (and more recently snapchat). And I like sharing foodie adventures on Instagram, for some reason.

For a brief moment, I downloaded the Yelp app, because I thought I'd use it to find new places to try out in my area. I don't know why, but the app was a little confusing at the time, so I deleted it. In hindsight, I think I was just too lazy to learn how to use it. lol

I could've shared how I tried a soft serve cone from IKEA for the first time.

But, in any case, I've realized that I could still be using Yelp and would probably love it, so I brought it back to my mobile screen this week. I'm going to once again start writing reviews as part of my blog makeover. I've missed it!

Back here on the blog I had had a series called Buy It and Try It, where I would buy products (many times handmade items from Etsy), try them out and then write my review here. I only did a handful of these reviews, but I love them. So I'm going to get back to them...Only this time, I'll be reviewing dessert places and eateries in the Greater Sacramento Area too! I'll be using Yelp as well. It's probably something I should've done from the beginning.

I also could've shared the grand opening of a new dessert place in Elk Grove, CA.
Sweet Puffs Ice Cream has Taro flavor - Ummm...YUMMMM.
They opened in the summer, and we were there!

When I was only posting short, quick blog posts last year, I at least gave a small shout out to a few places (like this one, where I shared about my new obsession with Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates). Moving forward, I hope to share more in-depth reviews of places that we visit and share with you our favorites.

Are you on Yelp? You can find me here.
www.kim-2justByou.yelp.com
I've still got to learn how to use it, and I've already got places in mind to visit and reviews to write. =0)
Tell me, what are your experiences on Yelp?

Hello, October 2017

October is here. So it's time for all things autumn. For real. The weather actually might do its thing and cooperate. No more 90 degrees...At least, I hope not.

One of the great things I love about fall is the cool, crisp mornings. I enjoy waking up with a sip from a cup of tea or coffee to warm me, and maybe a scone. I especially love this on a weekend, because I can sleep in past 6 am and really enjoy it without being rushed out the door!

A post shared by 2justByou (@2justbyou) on

With the arrival of October also comes the holiday rush with the small biz. We're slowly started to restock our Etsy shop with some old favorites while we photograph and prepare our  new listings to go live (coming soon). Here's one of our latest, the Runner's Marathon Necklace.

We just added it back to the shop over the weekend. It comes in two varieties, the half marathon and the full marathon. Go take a peek!

We're also busy this month trying to find all of our Poshmark listings from our many still-unpacked moving boxes...It's quite a chore. And not a fun one.

If you're looking for some silver strappy heels, look no further! We've got a brand new pair of Cathy Jean heels that are perfect. Size 7.5, true to fit. Never worn.

So that's what we're up to these days.
And today, October 1st, is National Homemade Cookies Day! Such a great day to celebrate, I think. I love homemade cookies. Don't you?

Homemade Butterfinger Cookies

I'm working on a post to share those yummy butterfinger cookies shown above. So stay tuned for that. They're really delicious.

But if you want to get into fall with all things pumpkin pie spice, then you can try the Pumpkin Pie Spice Chocolate Chip Cookies that I shared back in 2013 here. =0)

Now that you know what I've been up to lately, how about you?
What do you do in October that gets you geared up and totally into fall season? Leave me a comment to let me know!
